Sun Dog season

(This is another science post...requested by Becky)

A sun dog or sundog (scientific name parhelion, plural parhelia, from Greek parēlion (παρήλιον) from παρά (beside) + ἥλιος (sun), "beside the sun"; also called a mock sun[1] or a phantom sun[2]) is an atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo on either side of the sun.

The new 360!

Frank brought home a prototype of the newest Riddell helmet and it seems to check out just fine!  No head injuries to report yet!

Wooly Bears

According to legend, the wider that middle brown section is (i.e., the more brown segments there are), the milder the coming winter will be. Conversely, a narrow brown band is said to predict a harsh winter. But is it true?

Mike Peters, an entomologist at the University of Massachusetts, doesn't disagree, but he says there could, in fact, be a link between winter severity and the brown band of a woolly bear caterpillar. "There's evidence," he says, "that the number of brown hairs has to do with the age of the caterpillar—in other words, how late it got going in the spring. The [band] does say something about a heavy winter or an early spring. The only thing is . . . it's telling you about the previous year."

Your science lesson for the day...my dad would be so proud!

Our new shed!

Frank has been hard at work using his carpentry skills to create a new shed for my questionable gardening skills.  Maybe he thinks that a better shed will make me a better gardener!  Anyway, the shed is awesome!

Our First Kristin Visit!

Kristin brought a few of her new friends home to stay (briefly) before dashing off to a concert in Illinois.  We enjoyed a nice dinner and some fun at the farmer's market and then waved goodbye to our little music lovers...
